2 February 2017,

I was recently very privileged to be invited along for a meeting with award winning cake artist and designer Sherry Hostler.

The very talented Sherry has many accolades under her belt including the Gold Standard from Squires Kitchen and Cake International and her work has been featured in numerous leading industry magazines including Hello, Conde Nast Brides, Wedding and Wedding Cakes.

It was great to chat with Sherry about all things wedding and she kindly offered to share her views on the top wedding cake trends for 2017. Hope you enjoy hearing all about them – I certainly did as I completely indulged myself, consuming my way through all  her delicious cake samples! ( there were none left!) They were absolutely delicious, my favourite being her pink champagne flavour – can’t wait for my next meeting with her!

Over to you Sherry…

If you are getting marred this year, it looks like the 2017 wedding cake trends are more diverse than ever, which is really how it should be.

Let’s look at the Top 10 in no particular order:

1.Naked Cakes

The rise to stardom of the naked cake has been phenomenal over the last year and these rustic beauties show no signs of waning in popularity just yet. Absolutely perfect for boho styled weddings held in converted barns, these un-iced cakes make you want to drool just by looking at them.

2. Hand Painted Cakes

These little beauties have been slowly regaining in popularity over the last year and offer a ‘cake as canvas’ depiction of whatever you would like for your big day, be it flowers or a city scape. The Queen of The Hand Painted Cake, Natasha Collins has now even produced a range of edible paints if you would like to have a go yourself.

3. Geode Cakes

OH…MY…GOD! The first time I saw one of these I completely flipped out! Just stunning. I’ve yet to be asked to make one , but I can’t wait until I do. Mixing up the delights of jewel tones, metallics and mind blowing creativity.

4. Drip Cakes

For fun loving couples who want something just a little bit different. You can go for a cake which is covered with natural coloured chocolate, or maybe have the chocolate coloured to tie in with the hues you are using for your wedding.

5. Wreath Cakes

Oh how much do I love these! For so many years us cake makers have put edible flowers around the base of cake tiers and now some clever bunny has flipped then over and attached them to the front of the cake. So eye catching and perfect for showing off a monogram.

6. The Marbled Icing Cake

Why have plain icing when you can marble it??? It gives such an interesting effect and can be as subtle or bold as you want to go, again drawing on the colours that you are using for your big day.

7. Natural Organic Bouquets

Look to nature for some organic displays of floral decoration on your cake, as though untouched by human hand.

8. Metallics

Still a very popular choice for 2017.  If you want to go for full metallic magic, then look towards edible leaf or for something a little more subtle, maybe an edible lustre dust. Either look amazing with the right design and can totally lift a simple cake to a piece of artistry.

9. Bas Relief

This form of decor has actually been around for quite some time, but it seems to be making a bit of a long over-due comeback. The effects that can be created are just stunning and particularly so when using all one colour.

10. Buttercream Cakes

The slightly overdressed sister of the ‘naked cake’ is still very popular. Some people don’t like the taste of fondant icing, which means that buttercream is a fabulous choice. It looks good. It tastes good. What’s not to love?

Thank you so much Sherry for your trend predictions for the year ahead. My mouth is watering just thinking about them all… good time for a cup of tea me thinks and of course a slice of cake!
